High altitude acclimatization trek
Today is a key acclimatization day as you ascend to Lava Tower (4,600m) before descending to Barranco Camp (3,900m). This "climb high, sleep low" strategy is excellent for altitude adaptation.
The trek to Lava Tower takes you through increasingly barren alpine desert. After lunch at Lava Tower, descend through the scenic Barranco Valley with its dramatic cliffs and unique vegetation. Arrive at Barranco Camp with its famous views of the Barranco Wall.
"Climb High, Sleep Low"
This acclimatization day follows the mountaineering principle of climbing to higher altitude (4,600m) then descending to sleep at a lower altitude (3,900m). This significantly improves your body's adaptation to altitude.

Conquering the Barranco Wall
Today features the famous Barranco Wall - a challenging but non-technical scramble that offers some of the best views on the mountain. After conquering the wall, descend into the Karanga Valley.
The trail continues through alpine desert with spectacular views of the southern glaciers. Arrive at Karanga Camp (4,200m) in time for lunch. The afternoon is for rest and preparation for summit night. Enjoy an early dinner before resting for the big day ahead.
The Barranco Wall (4,200m)
Often called the "Breakfast Wall" as it's tackled first thing in the morning. While it looks imposing, it's a non-technical scramble that most trekkers manage well. Your guides provide assistance at any tricky sections.

Ascending to high camp
A shorter trek today as you ascend to Barafu Camp (4,700m), your base for the summit attempt. The trail climbs through alpine desert with increasingly spectacular views of Mawenzi Peak.
Arrive at Barafu Camp by early afternoon. The remainder of the day is for rest, hydration, and final summit preparations. An early dinner is served before retiring to your tent for a few hours of sleep before the midnight summit attempt.
Midnight Summit Start
Starting at midnight allows you to summit at sunrise, avoid afternoon cloud cover, and descend before the snow softens. Your guides will wake you at 11:00 PM for final preparations before beginning the ascent.
